Short answer: Dossier Woody Sandalwood is the Santal 33 alternative with the clearest brand statement and the most outside coverage, and ALT. Fragrances Simply Santal also names the original in its own listing. Maison Louis Marie No.04 and Commodity Book are reviewer comparisons that go softer and lighter. None is the original, and none can be called identical.
This page is desk research. It draws on brand pages, Amazon listings checked on October 19, 2026 and a published roundup. We have not smelled, worn or blind-compared any of these. The roundup comes from Scento, which sells perfume and Santal 33 decants, so its ranking is opinion with a commercial interest.
Quick comparison
| Alternative | What the brand or source says | Who names the comparison | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dossier Woody Sandalwood, 50 ml | Violet leaves and cardamom, then orris, cedarwood and cypriol, then musk, sandalwood and amber | The brand, plus Scento | Dossier says it is not affiliated with Le Labo |
| ALT. Fragrances Simply Santal, 60 ml | Listing says “Inspired by Sant. 33”; Extrait de Parfum with a sandalwood-leather description | The brand | We found no outside roundup coverage in the sources we read |
| Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt, 1.7 oz | Sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver and amber wood; softer, with no leather per the sources | Scento and the reviewers it cites | The maker makes no comparison claim |
| Commodity Book Expressive, 100 ml | A lighter, fresher take, with cucumber and dill notes per the roundup | Scento and the reviewers it cites | Sold in three strengths; sources do not say which was compared |
The alternatives
Dossier Woody Sandalwood: the clearest statement
Dossier’s Woody Sandalwood page lists violet leaves and cardamom on top, orris, ambrox, cedarwood and cypriol in the heart, and musk, sandalwood and amber at the base. It calls the scent its affordable interpretation inspired by Santal 33 and says Dossier is not affiliated with Le Labo. Scento adds that it uses a different sandalwood from the original and cites press and Fragrantica commentary favorable to the comparison. The Amazon listing is the 50 ml Eau de Parfum sold by Dossier; a 100 ml size is listed too.
- Choose it if you want to read the notes before you buy and prefer a brand that states its inspiration.
- Skip it if your issue with Santal 33 is a specific facet. Work out what you dislike first, because a named inspiration does not remove it.
ALT. Fragrances Simply Santal: the second brand-named option
The 60 ml listing is an Extrait de Parfum sold by ALT. Fragrances, and its title says it is inspired by Santal 33, with a sandalwood-and-leather description. A 100 ml size is also listed. The roundup we read does not cover it, so we have fewer outside voices on this one than on Dossier.
- Choose it if you want a second brand-stated option to compare with Dossier.
- Skip it if you want independent reviews before spending.
Maison Louis Marie No.04 Bois de Balincourt: the softer route
Scento says reviewers it cites, including Aroma Authority and a Fragrantica commenter, compare Bois de Balincourt with Santal 33, and that it is softer with no leather. Maison Louis Marie does not describe it as a copy. The Amazon listing is sold by Maison Louis Marie and names sandalwood, cedarwood, vetiver and amber wood. A travel set with a 3 ml oil and a 10 ml spray makes it easy to try.
- Choose it if you like the idea of sandalwood and cedar but want it gentler.
- Skip it if the leather and smoke are what you want from Santal 33.
Commodity Book: the lighter take
Scento calls Commodity Book a lighter, fresher take with cucumber and dill notes, and says several Fragrantica reviewers compare it with Santal 33. It comes in Personal, Expressive and Bold strengths, and the sources do not say which was compared. We link the Expressive 100 ml , a third-party offer that showed limited stock when we checked, and a 10 ml travel spray from another seller.
- Choose it if you want something brighter and less woody-dry.
- Skip it if you want a close structural match, since the roundup frames it as a different take.
If you want a creamier sandalwood instead
Some roundups point to Diptyque Tam Dao as a milky, quieter sandalwood that is related to Santal 33 by theme rather than copied from it. That is a different search from a dupe, so we cover it, alongside Tom Ford Santal Blush, in our sandalwood perfume guide .
The original, if you would rather start there
Third-party sellers list Le Labo Santal 33 Eau de Parfum on Amazon in 30 ml and 3.4 oz , both new but showing limited stock when we checked. Amazon also lists a Le Labo discovery set of 0.05 oz sprays that includes Santal 33, from a third-party seller. Confirm the seller, size and return terms before ordering, as with any fragrance sold outside the brand’s own store.
Before you buy any of them
- Sample the original first. If you do not enjoy Santal 33 itself, a cheaper interpretation will not fix that.
- Name what you dislike. If the issue is the leather, smoke or an unusual vegetal note, a close alternative may share it.
- Judge each alternative on its own. Buy it because you like wearing it, not because a roundup used the word “dupe.”
- Compare the delivered total, the seller and the return terms. Opened fragrance is often final sale.
